HUNANANIHO BEACH CLEAN UP
What: A beach clean up event where we provide all the clean up supplies, as well as cultural activities for you and your family to explore!
Who: Everyone! Local, tourists, children, adults - anyone who wants to make a difference and learn something!
When: Bi-monthly on Saturdays, from 10am to 1pm
Where: Hunananiho Beach Park (map below)
Why: Hawaii faces a big microplastic pollution problem, and we want to educate the general public about the issue and have everyone think about ways they can make a difference. In addition, this is a great way to learn about Hawaiian culture and engage with the local community.
Preparation
All clean up supplies (sand sifters, gloves, trash pickers, trash bags) are provided. We ask our volunteers to bring their own refillable water bottles, reef safe sunscreens, and hats.
Getting to the park
The clean up will be held at Hunananiho Beach park. After turning into the road from Kalaniana’ole Highway, turn to the parking lot to the right. Parking is free but it is possible that it will fill up. If the right lot is full, you can make a left and there are additional parking stalls.
You can copy and paste the following coordinates for the parking lot:
21.34354544717556, -157.7025950495261
After you get to the parking lot, head towards the beach and look for white tents with the banner “Clean Up” on it.
Alternatively, walk along the beach and look for our signature huli sifter!
Event day
We believe clean up are more than just picking up trash. Which is why each of the team member will try to engage and educate about the microplastic problem and solution while you are here. We also want to take the opportunity to educate about Hawaiian culture, which is why we start the day with Oli Hawaiian chanting, and play Ulu Maika throughout the event. We also have free ti-leaf weaving workshops (yes you get to keep it!)
-
We absolutely encourage tourists to participate in this event! It is completely free and we would love tourists to engage with locals as part of their stay.
-
Although we would love to have you for the entire event, you are totally free to come late or leave early, any bit of volunteering counts! Please keep in mind that the Oli chanting only happens once at the beginning of the event.
-
We partner with local public schools to make microplastic art, so we donate the clean and sorted microplastic to them. Some unsorted trash are taken back to our headquarters (aka Jared’s garage) for research. Finally, any bulk trash is taken to the city’s official trash dump site.
